Exotic bird species including but not restricted to parrots, parakeets, macaws and cockatiels are probably the most intelligent of bird species kept in captivity and are a hard nut to crack.
Keeping these pretty boys happy is a job in itself and requires understanding and in-depth knowledge, most of which is gained over time.
However, in the interim providing them with several bird stands around the house if they are kept indoors but have free range is essential, because although exotic birds are reasonably sociable with other similar birds and humans alike they do actually need space of their own where they can retreat to when the mood takes them.
Several bird stands placed at strategic points around the home affords it (them) the opportunity to socialize or play the aloof, cool dude if they want. With experience it is best to have only one stand with food and water receptacles on to avoid lots of mess in many places.
For obvious reasons, place something to catch the bird doo-doo beneath each of the bird stands because unlike humans (well, most of us anyway) they tend to do the business where they are perched, just as they would in their natural habitat and it can be difficult to clean the carpet and can leave permanent stains. Some exotic bird owners make use of flight suits with diaper liners for their birds to overcome this very problem.
If any of the bird stands have food dispensers or receptacles attached to them make sure there is an adequate amount of bird food available at all times and make sure the bird food is changed and refreshed regularly; also please ensure that bird food, bird stands and any other bird supplies such as bird toys are sourced from a reliable and regular supplier, preferably a bird supplies company whose owners have kept their own flight of exotic birds for many years and understand them inside out.
To prevent boredom setting in, mix the feeding time into play time and place little titbits of food or goodies and treats into what are referred to a puzzle bird toys, they will have to use their guile and natural inquisitiveness to get at it, this keeps them stimulated and challenged.
Have several bird toys like this so that they can be placed in different places around the home and on the bird stands to keep it varied.
Symptoms of boredom are feather plucking, screeching sessions for no reason, biting and pacing although there are others.
Keep your bird stimulated and happy with adequate bird supplies of bird food and bird toys, but equally offer them several bird stands around the home or aviary which they can claim as their own patch.
